Athletes on the hunt for good views, head north. Woodstock, Vermont-sometimes called the prettiest small town in America, steeped in history and known for its covered bridges and Paul Revere church bells-isn’t just a quaint New England photo opp; it’s the picturesque setting of your next dream winter workout. Listen closely: Ski slopes, cross country routes, miles of outdoor adventure, and relaxing recovery spa treatments are calling your name.

Sleep Well

Stay at Woodstock’s prime address: The Woodstock Inn & Resort, on The Green downtown. In true New England fashion, you’ll be greeted by a roaring fire and historic details (think: preserved paintings of the village throughout the years). But the Inn is also focused on the fit-offering transportation to and from local mountains and nordic skiing spots. Book a package aimed at athletes, like the Tubbs Snowshoes Excursion Package, which includes a guided trek of Marsh-Billings-Rockefeller National Historical Park (the only one in Vermont) and lunch at a cabin on nearby Mt. Tom.

Down the road just outside of town, newcomer 506 on the River-the first hotel to open in the area in decades-is a blend of history and hip. The boutique inn offers complimentary country breakfast, an indoor pool and sauna, and fun packages like the Vermont Brewery and Distillery Tour.

Stay in Shape

Near Woodstock, skiers have two options: Suicide Six, the Woodstock Inn’s own mountain featuring 24 curated trails (the Woodstock Union High School ski team-one of the best in the state-practices here); and bigger Killington, about 20 miles down the road-which has 155 trails and gondolas to avoid the chill (score!).

Downhill not your thing? Head to Tubbs Snowshoes & Nordic Adventure Center fat tire biking, cross country skiing, or snow shoeing; or hike and run miles of snowy, scenic trails throughout Marsh-Billings-Rockefeller National Historical Park. Just outside of town in nearby Quechee, get your outdoor adventure on at Wilderness Trails, where you can ice fish, tube, and even perfect your skill in archery. Fuel Your Trip

On Elm Street in downtown Woodstock, you’ll find one of Vermont’s finest eateries: The Prince & the Pauper. It’s Prix Fixe menu changes daily, but features fresh and local foods and comforting dishes like Butternut Squash and Apple Cider Soup (yum). At the Woodstock Inn, don’t miss Richardson’s Tavern where a pub-like environment blends perfectly with comfy fireside chairs and delicious homemade dishes, like the house ricotta.

Gather your own goods at the Woodstock Farmer’s Market, which has everything you’d expect but also fresh and healthy prepared meals; locally sourced cheeses; and speciality groceries.

Splurge

A trip to Vermont wouldn’t be complete without sipping craft beer. And Worthy Kitchen-a farm diner (think: comfort foods like nachos and chicken wings made with local ingredients) with an 18 beer draught list-is the place to do it. Worthy focuses particularly on small Vermont breweries like Hill Farmstead and Lawson’s Finest. The calories don’t count if you’re drinking local, right? (Check out 4 Reasons to Reach for a Beer!)

Recover Right

Long day on the slopes? Sore from a hike? The Spa at the Woodstock Inn is just the recovery you need. Built with a focus on natural light (buh-bye creepy basement spa treatments), the 10,000 foot, LEED-certified space is home to 10 different treatment rooms. Pick from indulgences like the Organic Detox Facial or a Hot Chocolate Body Wrap. Afterwards, hang in the co-ed “Great Room” (bring your guy!); or brave the cold to dip in the outdoor hot tub and sauna.
